I CREATE COMPLEX EXPERIENCES AT
SOCCER CASTING 2016
FOREIGN CITY
50 Players expected
80 successfully captured on photo and video
Here were the challenges
and my Solutions.
Make a schedule.
Build an online booking system.
Make everyone complete a form,
including a selfie,
before or on arrival,
and sync every appointment
to the calendars used on set.
Who was in front of me
picture, age, location, position and level
was available even while shooting.
Notes could be added in real time,
and post-production already knew
who was who.
Tell models
to bring
soccer clothes.
Convince the client to supply every outfit in every size,
multiples of S and M, goalkeeper kits, shoes
and a lot of underwear.
A uniform visual language makes comparison easier and keeps competitor brands out of frame. Enough duplicates kept three to five players ready at once.
And a surprising number of soccer players don't wear underwear.
Prepare catering.
They're athletes.
Feed them like athletes.
Plan a walkthrough.
Design it for the crowd I expect,
not the number on paper.
Saturday attendance more than doubled.
A casting studio is a destination. A familiar soccer venue isn’t.
Find
the right
players.
Map the world's best-known players
and ask at the same time:
Could anyone here double for them?
Body doubles are rare.
If the opportunity is there, build that option into the casting too.
Take digitals
and a video
in action.
Build a routine around
position and skill.
Ask each player what they can do,
then record it
—
including things
nobody asked for.
A client cannot request evidence they don't yet know they'll need.
The casting should answer tomorrow's questions too.
Take pictures and videos.
Take notes on every person during the casting.
Have everyone else do the same.
Then, over dinner,
ask what and who they still remember
and add that to the client's record.
Live impressions and remembered impressions are different signals.
When several people independently remember the same person or skill afterwards, that overlap matters.
Sort and edit the material.
Design a workflow
so processing happens behind me
while I'm still shooting.
When the last piece of equipment is packed,
the work is done.
Plan dinner.
Find a restaurant next to a laundromat
that accommodates every allergy
and dietary restriction.
Wash and dry the clothes while we eat.
THE SOLUTIONS
NOBODY SAW.
- SOCIAL BEHAVIOR.
- TECHNOLOGY.
- PHOTOGRAPHY.
- LOGISTICS.
- CLIENT PSYCHOLOGY.
- DATA.
- WARDROBE.
- GEOGRAPHY.
- NUTRITION.
They look unrelated.
They weren't.
I think in decades.
And across
several levels
at once.
I see opportunity beyond constraints.
I calculate for personality, cultural identity, technology, outside perception, lifestyle choices, resources, skills, ambitions, social interaction and health.
I design for their connections — and for their consequences.

I look for patterns,
connect things that are usually considered separately,
